The Indian automobile industry must ask itself why it has chosen a “low volume, high margins” business, says Ratan Tata. The Tata Group’s Chairman Emeritus was speaking at the Frost & Sullivan Growth Innovation Leadership 2014 summit in Mumbai. “The Indian car market doesn’t deserve to be at 3 million,” he said, comparing the Indian market to China’s market which has swollen to become the largest car market in the world in a matter of a decade. Ratan Tata says the industry in India deserves to be much larger than the 3 million it is presently targeting. Ratan Tata asked the industry if they, Tata Motors included, have made cars too expensive and eventually out of reach of a wider market. Mr Tata was awarded the Growth Innovation Leadership award and joins its hall of fame which includes people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sir Richard Branson amongst others. Ratan Tata has been credited with creating India’s first indigenous car back in 1998 with the Tata Indica and his company has since pioneered other high-selling segments including the sub-4 meter compact sedan. Indonesia Live – Daihatsu Xenia Indigo mini MPV Posted: 24 Sep 2014 06:36 AM PDT A similar kit will be commercialized soon. PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) has presented a series of special editions, besides three concept cars, at the 2014 Indonesia International Motor Show. The Daihatsu Xenia Indigo, based on the Xenia, is one of them, that showcases the customization potential in the vehicle. The R&D team at Daihatsu have modified this car with ‘exotic’ and ‘elegant’ as the keywords. The vehicle is draped in a special Purplish Blue body colour. Called Indigo because of the paint, the car gets exclusive front and rear bumper, spoiler, side skirts, backdoor garnishes, rims, exhaust, headlamp and taillamp. The interior does not undergo many changes except for the matching upholstery colour, sporty pedals and a new steering wheel. According to the project development head, there are no changes to the engine, chassis and suspension. This implies that the vehicle will be powered by the 1,298 cc engine that develops 92 PS (90.7 bhp) at 6,000 rpm and 11.9 kg-m (116.6 Nm) at 4,400 rpm. In stock condition, the car measures 4,140 mm x 1,660 mm x 1,685 mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 2,655 mm. Indonesia Live – Daihatsu Terios Spirit mini SUV Posted: 24 Sep 2014 06:34 AM PDT The Toyota Rush’s badge-engineered cousin travels through time. PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) displayed the Daihatsu Terios Spirit at its stand alongside several other concepts, cars and displays at the Indonesia International Motor Show 2014 (IIMS 2014). Not only is the Spirit an exhibit to market the customization potential of the Terios, it is also the forerunner to the Terios facelift that the Indonesian media expect in showrooms next year. One marketing official at ADM confirms that future Terios production models will be much like the Spirit. The first results could be seen as early as the first quarter of 2015. The Terios Spirit is fixed with new headlamps, grille, and bumper. The headlamps get LED lights and projectors, that look production ready. The front bumper is garnished with chrome accents and the side profile is jazzed-up with a chrome band on the wheelbase, mirror-mounted indicators, black roof rails and chrome alloy wheels. At the rear, the Spirit flaunts a large roof spoiler and clear-lens taillamps. The mechanical assembly of the car continues as it is with the 1,495 cc four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 109 PS (107.46 bhp) at 6,000 rpm and 14.4 kg-m (141.2 Nm) at 4,400 rpm, paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. IAB Report – 2015 Mercedes C 63 AMG revealed [Update] Posted: 24 Sep 2014 05:01 AM PDT Update – Mercedes-Benz has issued new images and a press release which have been updated to this story. The car will be displayed at the Paris Motor Show which begins on Oct 2. Likely to come to India next year. Preliminary pictures and specifications of the new Mercedes C63 AMG and C63 AMG S have been released ahead of their imminent unveiling. The front view and interior shots are yet to be uploaded by Mercedes-Benz. The 2015 C63 AMG wears an aggressive body kit that features sportier bumpers, aerodynamic side skirts and a rear diffuser that is accompanied by a quad-exhaust. Also immediately noticeable would be the power-dome hood, AMG-branded grille and 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels. The C63 AMG is the best-selling AMG model till date with over 40,000 vehicles on-road. Stepping indoors, the C 63 gets a flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather/microfiber sport seats, and stainless steel pedals. A dashboard wrapped in ARTICO, aluminum trim, black headliner, AMG-designed instrument cluster, front door sill plate illumination and AMG-branded floor mats are the other highlights. Spoiler, quad-exhaust and diffuser set apart the C 63 from the regular C Class. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine borrowed from the AMG-GT sportscar is harnessed for power. The Suzuki APV Luxury edition was showcased at the Indonesia International Motor Show 2014 (IIMS 2014). Based on the APV MPV, the Luxury edition gets styling and feature changes. The APV Luxury gets sportier exteriors compared to the regular variants. The exterior has a new grille and extended bumpers, side skirts, 17-inch alloy wheels, reverse parking sensors, muffler extension, rear spoiler and keyless entry with alarm system. Luxury badges on the fenders and chrome elements for the foglight enclosures, wing mirrors and tailpipe complete the outside changes. Inside, the MPV gets beige seat covers, captain’s chairs for the second row, double blower aircon, music system and wood-like inserts for the dashboard. The 2014 Honda City MUGEN was showcased at the 2014 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS 2014). Based on the new generation of the City, the MUGEN pack adds cosmetic enhancers to the sedan. The MUGEN kit can be specified on any variant of the City. The upgrade comes in the form of an all-black grille with the MUGEN logo replacing the Honda symbol, MUGEN badges on the fenders, side skirts and a bodykit for the front and rear bumpers. There are no under-hood changes on the car, and it continues to be driven by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine which is capable of producing 120 PS (118.31 bhp) and 145 Nm of torque. Spied – Production Ssangyong X100 compact SUV’s patent sketches leaked Posted: 24 Sep 2014 03:10 AM PDT Ford EcoSport rival from the Mahindra-owned company launching next year in Europe.  Ssangyong will debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show the XIV Adventure and XIV Air concepts. These concepts preview the company’s new compact SUV (codenamed Ssangyong X100) which is slated to launch sometime early next year. The production X100 looks familiar from all the concepts Ssangyong has presented over the last two years. The production-spec Ssangyong X100’s patent sketches have been leaked in China providing us a comprehensive look at the car’s design. Complete with registration plate holders, indicators, door handles, muffler, windshield wipers and a fuel lid, the car should be revealed soon after the Paris Motor Show. The car will begin a new design chapter for Ssangyong with a sharp front end featuring peeled back headlamps and symmetrical foglamps. The roofline of the SUV slopes gently towards the C-Pillar, reminiscing the Range Rover Evoque, while the rear wheel arch is accentuated with an extra crease. At the rear, designers have given it curvy taillamps, recessed tailgate and a stoplamp on the bumper. The SUV would measure about 4.1 meters in length and sport an Evoquish roofline While details on the compact SUV are limited, the company says that the concepts coming to the Paris Motor Show will measure 4,195 mm in length and have a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. Volkswagen India has introduced the VW Vento facelift at a starting price of INR 7.44 lakhs. The big feature on the facelift is the launch of the 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel engine which was introduced on the Polo facelift in July, and along with it the seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Mr. Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars at the launch of New Volkswagen Vento 1.5 TDI with DSG. Cosmetically, the front fascia of the Vento facelift receives new double-barrel headlamps, a slightly redesigned front bumper, new alloy wheels and a mildly updated rear bumper and taillamp. Spied – Maruti Swift facelift spotted again with LED DRLs Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:55 PM PDT Popular B-Segment hatchback gets minor cosmetic and feature changes.  The Maruti Swift facelift has been spotted in India once again, and these images were published on GaadiWaadi.com. The popular B-segment hatchback is set to receive mild cosmetic and feature changes, and launch by the end of this year to further keep competition at bay. The Swift facelift is easily recognized thanks to its LED daytime running lights. Exterior changes will come in the form of LED daytime running lights (like the European model), slightly larger foglamp enclosures, and redesigned alloy wheels. Save for these changes, the company has not altered the looks, which is now a tried-and-tested formula in India for easy sales and profit. Inside, the Swift is very likely to be given new features like power folding wing mirrors, keyless entry and an engine starter button. Other features that were already seen on the top-end variant like dual airbags, ABS, EBD, climate control and a 2-DIN music system, will continue to be offered. General Motors India today announced the launch of the new Chevrolet Sail and Chevrolet Sail hatchback at prices of INR 5.19 lakhs to 7.64 lakhs and INR 4.41 to 6.81 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) respectively. A chrome surround and a boot chrome strip are the exterior changes. The main changes are concentrated on the interior which get a dual tone black and beige combination with highlights in silver and chrome. A new 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth functionality has been added, which supports five phone pairings and Bluetooth audio streaming. AC vent bezel and HVAC control knobs have chrome surrounds, while door handles and the gear shifter have silver surrounds. The steering wheel is now in black and the background lighting in the instruments is a light blue. A new music system with a dual tone interior is central to the relaunch. External additions stop with a chrome surround for the foglamp enclosure and a chrome strip on the bootlid of the sedan. The features and mechanical carriage of the vehicles stay the same. Report – Daihatsu’s next gen tall-boy city car leaked Posted: 23 Sep 2014 10:03 PM PDT Sales could be restricted to the Japanese market. A blog on Ameblo has posted leaked images of Daihatsu’s next generation city car that is likely to be exclusively sold in the Japanese market. The 1BOX’s main competitor would be the Honda N-Series. A continuation of the Daihatsu Deca Deca concept displayed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, the ‘Daihatsu 1BOX’ will be launched in the Japanese market in the coming months. Likely to fall into the ‘kei’ car category, the rush-hour-ready 1BOX would have a 660 cc engine, and could be offered in FWD and AWD variants. The car is reported as the successor to the Daihatsu Atrai (a vehicle comparable to the Maruti Omni, licensed to other manufacturers globally like Piaggio) and would be marketed for its space, fuel economy and cabin flexibility. A 660 cc engine paired to an optional AWD system is expected on the top-end variants. The Deca Deca concept used the "Super Space concept" in its interior. It measured 1.85 m high to offer an elevated seating position, and to load and unload large articles double doors were designed with wide openings. Like the previous 430 16M Scuderia, Ferrari will announce an open top version of their latest track-focused 458 Speciale that will be built in limited numbers, at the Paris Motor Show 2014 which opens on October 2. The 458 Speciale Spider will be the fastest open-top Ferrari in history. The Ferrari 458 Speciale Spider (tentative name) will be the fastest open top Ferrari ever built, till the time when Ferrari takes the wraps off the LaFerrari Spider. Interior changes include new seats and carbon fiber mats, while the exterior will sport stripes, like the regular 458 Spider. While the 458 Speciale Coupe is offered with only a single wheel design, customers can choose between two new wheel designs as well as new stripe designs for further customization of their 458 Speciale Spider, reports say.
