Bentley Becomes 1st Firm to Get 'Net Zero Plastic to Nature' Certification

Bentley Motors has become the first company to be awarded South Pole's Net Zero Plastic to Nature accreditation after engaging in a successful waste stewardship appraisal. The status, which is internationally recognised, reflects the company's ongoing environmental initiatives and is a key part of Bentley's Beyond 100 strategy to achieve end-to-end carbon neutrality by 2030.

Bentley's industry-leading drive to assess, reduce and mitigate the global plastic footprint of its logistics packaging, vehicle protection and aftersales packaging was analysed by independent, Switzerland-based experts at the South Pole organisation.

The in-depth assessment covered everything from operational macro-plastic parts packaging used in logistics and manufacturing, to the disposal of plastic protection downstream at global dealerships. It also assessed micro-plastic emissions from tyre abrasion as part of the logistics and product lifecycle, identifying a total plastic footprint of 165.4 tonnes. The audit found that the majority of plastic waste was already recycled appropriately and made recommendations for in-region improvements to tackle the small amount of non-processed waste which was identified through the assessment.

To secure the status, Bentley has invested in certified units that support two of South Pole's projects focused on developing specialist plastic waste collection and recycling infrastructure projects. These are with Neela Saga in India and Second Life in Thailand. This action ensures that the full volume of non-processed plastic waste found in the 2021 study has been effectively mitigated.

Announced in 2020, Bentley's ground-breaking Beyond100 strategy targets sustainable mobility leadership, reinventing every aspect of the business. The aim is to be end-to-end carbon neutral by 2030, with the Crewe headquarters climate positive thereafter.

Honda Celebrates 50 Years of Fun, Efficient & Iconic Civic

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 11:30 PM PDT

Fifty years ago this month, Honda held the global introduction of a fun and fuel-efficient three-door hatchback that would go on to change the automotive landscape forever – the Honda Civic. A half-century later, with sales approaching 30 million globally and now in its 11th generation, Civic is the longest-running automotive nameplate in Honda history and the best-selling Honda automobile of all time.

Since going on sale in America in early 1973, Civic's 11 generations have consistently set the benchmark for the U.S. auto industry by delivering class-leading quality and reliability, outstanding fuel efficiency and low emissions, refined and responsive driving dynamics and top-class safety performance. This has earned the trust of American car buyers and a reputation as a segment-defining product. With U.S. sales of more than 12.3 million units, the vast majority produced in Honda's North American auto plants, Civic is one of the top three best-selling cars in America over the past five decades.

Civic is also one of the world's most awarded cars of its generation, consistently collecting the industry's top honors, including North American Car of the Year three times, Car and Driver magazine's "10 Best" honor eight times, and Motor Trend Car of the Year. And while Civic built its success through the loyalty of the baby boom generation, its popularity continues with younger buyers. Since 2011, Civic is the No. 1 vehicle among Millennial buyers, and has captured the most Gen Z, first-time, and multicultural buyers in the industry for the past six years.

Honda is sharing the 50th Anniversary celebration of the iconic Civic with its community on the brand's social media channels. Throughout the month of July, Honda fans can take a "Ride Through History," starting with car influencer, Omar Rana, as he highlights Civic's 50-year history in 50 seconds. The campaign culminates with a video series showcasing five decades of Civic, through five distinct chapters – from Civic's debut in the 1970's to the all-new, 11th-gen Civic lineup, narrated by John Cena, the voice of the Honda brand.

T-Roc Cabirolet - First Model to Get VW's New 1.5 TSI evo2 Engine

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 10:15 PM PDT

VW has enhanced its bestselling 1.5 TSI petrol engine and is now introducing the latest generation, the TSI evo2, in Europe. The T-Roc and T-Roc Cabriolet will be the first models to be delivered with the new engine. The TSI evo2 will also be introduced successively in other models by the end of the year.

The new TSI evo2 engine makes it possible to reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The compact, ultra-modern four-cylinder engine will initially be available with an output of 110 kW (150 PS), and further variants of the 1.5 TSI evo2 will follow.

In the latest evolutionary stage of the 1.5 TSI, the development engineers have moved the three-way catalytic converter and petrol particulate filter close to the engine in a single emission control module, thereby further improving the efficiency of the emission control system. As a further contribution to sustainability, this permits reduced use of precious metals in production and at the same time creates the basis for compliance with future emission standards.

Vw 1 5 Tsi Evo2 Engine

A key technological feature for reducing fuel consumption in the 1.5 l evo2 is the enhanced Active Cylinder Management system, ACTplus – a joint development of the Wolfsburg and Salzgitter sites. The focus of this new development was on improving activation and deactivation of the two cylinders in order to guarantee smooth engine running. The combustion process in two-cylinder operation was optimised, thus also allowing the operating range of the Active Cylinder Management system to be extended. With ACTplus, the second and third cylinders are not fired when the engine is operating at low and medium loads and speeds. This switchover is hardly noticeable. The efficiency is increased in the active cylinders, while the middle cylinders simply follow with practically no losses – they are reactivated when the accelerator is pressed again.

Alongside the variable-geometry turbocharger, the 1.5 TSI also features other high-tech components: the high-pressure injection system generates a pressure of up to 350 bar, plasma-coated cylinder walls reduce friction, and pistons with cast-in cooling ducts allow combustion to be optimised and efficiency increased.
