Naira plunges further against the dollar

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 06:04 PM PDT

The Naira weakened against the U.S. dollar at the official market on Friday, after the currency appreciated in the last two consecutive business days at the spot market.

The local unit which opened trading at N427.00 closed at N430.00 to a dollar on Friday, data posted on the FMDQ website where forex is officially traded showed.

This implies a N4.00 or 0.94 per cent devaluation from N426.00 it exchanged in the previous market session on Thursday.

The naira reached an intraday high of N406.90 and anchored to a low of N444.00 before closing at N430.00 per $1 on Friday, the last business day of the week.

This is the weakest rate the currency traded at the Nafex window this week. However, the weakest rate the naira has exchanged this year was the N430.33 mark it closed on Friday last week.

The currency has been trading within the range of N417 and N430.33 benchmarks at the official market within the last six months amidst forex scarcity.

Foreign exchange supply at the market on Friday plummeted by 79.83 per cent with $36.47 million recorded at the close of business against the $180.83 million posted in the previous session on Thursday.

Similarly, the naira depreciated further at the parallel market on Friday inching towards the N700 to a dollar rate.

Street market dealers in Uyo, exchanged the naira at N658.00 and sold at N660.00 to a dollar on Friday.

"The market is bad today," a currency dealer, Shuaibu told newsmen.

He said they were finding it difficult to withdraw dollars from their banks, reason the naira-to-dollar exchange margin is widening.

"The banks are hoarding the dollar from us," he added.

At the Abuja black market, currency dealers said they exchanged the dollar with the greenback currency at N655.00 to a dollar and sold at N658.00 on Friday.

"The price started going up since last year when CBN placed a ban on giving dollars to marketers," a dealer at Wuse Zone 4 market who refused to have his name in print told newsmen on Friday.

He also said the scarcity of dollars was because bankers were hoarding the notes.

"Even today, some EFCC officials came to harass us that we are the people causing inflation," he said.

Nigeria’s unity beyond 2023 is my priority – Buhari

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 05:56 PM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja told stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the unity, security and prosperity of the country would matter most to him, beyond his days in office as President.

The President expressed delight that the party is on towards that eventuality.

He thanked the delegation led by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, "for the kind words on my role in processes leading to the emergence of our candidate, and his running mate, for the Presidential election in February, next year.

''I want to thank you all for the roles you played in the build-up, first to our national convention earlier this year, and later, to the primary elections.

''You were all of one mind, wanting the best for the Party, with the candidate emerging in a free and fair manner.

''For us all, the cohesion and unity of the Party was the first priority, and ambition was second. I am glad that you all saw the larger picture, rather than narrow, self-serving interests.''

President Buhari recounted that when the presidential running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, was presented to him a couple of days ago, he had said he would reserve his comments till the handover ceremony on May 29, 2023, at the Eagle Square.

''I still maintain that same position,'' the President said, lauding party members for acknowledging the many virtues that qualify the Vice Presidential Candidate for the noble position.

The President expressed confidence that Shettima would not disappoint the Party, and Nigerians at large.

He also commended the Party for resolving to further mobilize more Nigerians, particularly youths, to register, and get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), saying ''It is the way to go.''

The National Chairman of the party, the Chairman, the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and Shettima, in separate remarks, expressed gratitude to the President for his exemplary leadership which has strengthened the Party in the aftermath of the convention and primaries.

Adamu said: ''Our main goal is to see the success of the APC in the forthcoming general elections. There's no better parting gift than to ensure that the APC produces the next President.''

Bagudu told the President that he had set a worthy precedence on internal democracy in political parties, saying:

''Under pressure to dictate or suggest , you were determined that the democratic process should be given the opportunity to work and what we have seen is that democratic processes can produce very excellent results.

''We have a Presidential Candidate and a running mate, whom we are all proud of.''

The Kebbi Governor attributed the gradual return of normalcy to the North Eastern part of the country to the spirited interventions approved by the President, acknowledging the rise in agricultural activities and food production in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States.

The Vice Presidential candidate reiterated the willingness of the APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and himself to serve Nigeria with justice, equity and fairness.

''We want to solicit the support of the President once INEC lifts the ban on open-air campaigns and we want to latch on to your achievements and brand name to victory, and consolidate the leadership of the party,'' he said.

3 policemen sanctioned for unprofessional conduct

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 05:42 PM PDT

The Police Command in Lagos State  has sanctioned two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) and one Inspector for alleged unprofessional conduct.

The command's spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this on his verified Twitter handle on Friday, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The officers, according to Hundeyin, are ASP Adedeji Babatunde, ASP Ebiloma John and Insp. Obidah Daniel, attached to the  Sagamu Road Police Division in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

NAN reports that the three officers were arrested after a video showing  their unprofessional conduct against  24-year-old David Ogunnusi, a Youth Corps member serving in Lagos  and his brother went viral.

According to Hundeyin, Ogunnusi told the police that the incident happened at New Garage, Ikorodu at about 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday, while they were heading to Ojota.

He said that the policemen allegedly stopped them and started harassing them.

"They asked for our ID cards, which we showed them as Corps members even in our uniforms, that was not enough proof for them.

"I asked them to check my bag if they would find any illicit substance or weapon in it but they chose not to, telling us to go inside their (patrol) bus, then I insisted; saying if they can't do it publicly we were not going in.

"Suddenly, a police man in mufti  gave me a blow, then they removed my Youth Corps'  face cap, while my brother was being  carried like an animal. I quickly created awareness then people joined in.

"So, the police just snatched my younger brother's phone and they zoomed off, saying we should come to their station," Ogunnusi explained.

The police spokesman said that the men were identified through the video that went viral, stressing that the officers as well as the corps members were at the command's headquarters on Friday, for  investigation.

Hundeyin said that after a careful study of the statements of all involved, it came to light that the police officers acted unprofessionally in demanding to whisk the corps member and his brother to the station for a search.

"That act was totally needless, provocative and unethical. It would have been a different case if a search at the same spot had yielded discovery of criminal items  on them which would  have warranted moving them to the station for further interrogation and statement taken.

" For this, CP Abiodun Alabi had ordered that the ASPs be queried and the Inspector defaulted in line with extant procedural rules of the Force.

"The corps member, on his part, will be prosecuted for inciting  the members of the public against the Police," he said.

Terrorism: You’re not thinking – Afenifere knocks Buhari govt over planned Okada ban

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 01:51 PM PDT

The Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, on Friday, slammed the Federal Government over its plan to ban motorcycles and mining activities in Nigeria.

Afenifere said such a move had shown that the Federal Government lacked deep and scientific thinking on how decisions were made.

Jare Ajayi, the spokesman of the organization, said the Federal Government was wrong in its proposed decision.

In a statement, Ajayi said: "The plan by the federal government to ban commercial motorcycle and mining activities purportedly to curb insecurity is another evidence that deep or scientific thinking does not characterize how decisions are arrived at in the corridors of power."

He noted that the government was wrong on limiting logistical sources of terrorists to mining and commercial motorcycling, stressing that, "it is hardly surprising therefore that its prescription is so fatally wrong!"

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had disclosed the planned move yesterday in Abuja.

Malami said the proposed move was aimed at cutting off terrorists' source of funding.

"Placing a ban on the use of motorcycles and mining activities will cut the supply of logistics to the terrorists," Malami had said.

However, the Afenifere spokesman said that motorcycle riding and mining had been in "existence long before terrorism reared its head. So these could not have been the leif motif of terrorism."

Ajayi added: "Also, to suppose that banning these activities would put a stop to terrorism is not only a wishful thinking, it amounts to an induced self-delusion that can only complicate the ailment that one is suffering from. Pursuing that line is leaving the substance to chase the shadow."

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the outcome of recent governorship elections shows his commitment to violence-free and credible polls.

According to him, the elections in Anambra, Osun and Ekiti States have proven that.

Buhari stated this, on Friday, when he received a delegation from Nasarawa led by the Governor of the State, Abdullahi Sule, in Abuja.

The President noted that his desire is to bequeath "an irreversible political process" that will be "democratic and acceptable" to Nigerians.

"Recent elections in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun are proof of my administration's irreversible commitment to credible and violence-free polls in Nigeria," he said.

2023: I’m not against Obi, Igbo Presidency – Umahi

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 01:23 PM PDT

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has said he was neither against the aspiration of Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, nor the quest for the Nigeria's president of Igbo extraction in 2023.

Umahi made the clarifications on Friday while reacting to a post making the rounds on social media quoting him as saying that he was against Mr Obi's presidential aspiration.

The post also quoted Umahi as saying that he does no longer believe in the struggle for the Nigeria's president of Igbo extraction.

But the Governor through a press statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Barrister Uchenna Orji, said the post in circulation was authored by political jobbers.

The statement reads: "The attention of Ebonyi State government has been drawn to a social media post being recently in circulation and purported to have been authored by the hard working Governor of Ebonyi State by miserable and frustrated political jobbers.

"For the records, the Governor of Ebonyi State is not against His Excellency, Peter Obi for Presidency but infact deeply appreciates his courage in his campaign.

"His Excellency,Engr Umahi never said that Peter Obi is going no where and that he does not believe in Igbo Presidency.

"However, His Excellency David Nweze Umahi is a member of APC and shall support the party in all their state and national elections as a good party man.

"The Governor believes that most party members will defend their parties during elections and people will freely vote for candidates of their choice."

Nigerians selling votes, INEC, police not neutral – Sanusi

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 01:22 PM PDT

Former Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, has charged Nigerians to stop selling their votes as the 2023 general elections draw closer, asking them to ensure sanctity and secrecy of the ballots.

Sanusi expressed worry that some Nigerian voters are in the habit of displaying their thumb-printed ballot papers as an evidence to trade their votes to politicians.

Sanusi spoke virtually during the 4th anniversary lecture of Penpushing Media held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Speaking on the annual lecture themed, 'Social Media Regulation: Insecurity and Elections Accountability in Nigeria,' Sanusi said the recent governorship elections held in Osun and some States came with some improvements, saying, however, that vote buying had been on the increase.

The leader of the Tijjaniyya Islamic Movement in Nigeria said Nigerians need to join hands in ensuring the sanctity and secrecy of their votes in 2023.

According to him, there was a lot to be done to stop rigging and subversion of people's wishes through the institutions that were supposed to be officially neutral like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, the judiciary and the security services.

These institutions, he alleged, "have all too often proven themselves to be rigging tools in the hands of politicians to undermine the will of the people."

While calling on Nigerians to be vigilant, he asked the institutions to respect their mandate by remaining neutral to ensure justice and fair play.

"One of the major ways in which elections are being subverted in the new acts is the policy of vote buying and this is a lack of respect for the law on secret ballot," he said.

The Founder, Penpushing Media, Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji advised journalists to always engage in thorough investigation so as to to avoid the spread of fake news, warning Nigerians against abuse of the social media.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Friday in Enugu.

Ndukwe said police operatives foiled the attack at about 6pm. on July 21.

He said, "Police operatives of the Command foiled an attack on Igbo-Eze North Police Division by armed and hooded criminal elements.

"The criminal elements came in their numbers, operating in black-coloured Hilux van and Toyota Highlander vehicles.

"The hoodlums shot sporadically at the station, with the police operatives returning fire, forcing them, many of whom are suspected to have sustained gunshot wounds, to escape."

The police spokesman noted that the police did not record any casualties in the encounter.

"The general public and owners of medical facilities in the state have been enjoined to report any person(s) with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station," he added.

2023: APC has no intention to exclude any religion, ethnic group – Lukman

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 10:06 AM PDT

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman, North West, Dr. Salihu Lukman has said the ruling party has no plan to exclude any religion or ethnic group ahead of the 2023 elections.

Lukman made this known on Friday in Abuja during an interview with select journalists, even as controversy continued to trail the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the party.

He explained that the aspirations of presidential candidates of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima is not a faith project, rather it is a Nigerian project.

He stated: "I think we need to be very honest to ourselves. It is true that people have concerns and those concerns are not being dismissed. To the best of my knowledge, all party leaders have acknowledged the concern. When you make a decision, certainly there are people who would be at the receiving end of such a decision.

"Our party, APC, is not working to exclude any category, whether in terms of religion, ethnicity or any other group. We have taken the decision to produce candidates and those candidates to the best of my knowledge and I think that is what came out at the unveiling yesterday (Wednesday)."

"We are about a Nigerian project, they are not a faith project. That is the emphasis and I think as a nation, we need to look much more positive. That I'm Salihu Lukman does not mean I am against a Festus or a Bankole."

The party chieftain said the party leaders from the North West have made it a priority to reconcile aggrieved party members and leaders before the commencement of the campaign.

Lukman stressed that there was no way there would be a political contest without disagreement.

He explained that as a party, APC would ensure that the business of reconciliation is a permanent business.

Lukman stressed: "The main issue is to really take forward the business of reconciling aggrieved members in each of our states and what we agreed to do moving forward is that in each of the states, there would be a state-level committee that would meet all party leaders and also aggrieved party members and make every effort to reconcile every party member before the commencement of the campaign for 2023 elections."

Baring his mind on the recent defection of party members in Kaduna State, Lukman assured that the leaders from the zone would address the issue next week.

He noted: "I don't know the details (defection in Kaduna) but I will go and look at it. As you can see there are members of the consultative meeting that were from Kaduna state, not just Kaduna itself.

"The fact-finding tour we are doing, Kaduna and Katsina are the only outstanding state and we have agreed that early next week, we will be in Kaduna and Katsina and this can be one of the issues we would look at and see what really transpired and see what step we need to take."

A Sharia court sitting in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State has adjourned the case of one Musa Tsafe who married his granddaughter, to Monday 25th July 2022.

Musa, a 57-years old in Tsafe Local Government Area of the State refused to divorce his granddaughter, who he married 23 years ago.

It was reported that the wife whose name was given as Wasila Isah Tsafe aged 37 had been married to her grandfather for the past 23 years with eight children from the marriage.

However, the case was brought to a Shari'a court in Tsafe by the Hisba Commission through their lawyer, Sani Muhammad while the accused man and his granddaughter-wife were represented at the court by their counsel, Ayuba Abdullahi.

After heated arguments by the counsels of both parties, the plaintiff's counsel quoted verses from the Holy Quran to support his arguments, notifying the court that the marriage was illegal according to Islamic religion..

The judge, Justice Mahe after hearing from both sites, adjourned the case to Monday 25th July 2022.

Recall that the Tsafe Emirate Council had summoned community leaders and Islamic scholars to investigate the matter and it was discovered that the marriage was illegal but Musa Tsafe insisted on continuing marrying his granddaughter, Wasila.

Again, airline operators announce flight disruptions amid aviation fuel scarcity

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 10:03 AM PDT

Nigerian airlines, under the aegis of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), say there will be major disruptions of flights due to scarcity of aviation fuel, also known as JET-A1.

Obiora Okonkwo, spokesperson, AON, said this in a statement released on Friday.

This is the second announcement on the disruption of services over the scarcity of aviation fuel in three months.

In May, AON said the scarcity of fuel negatively impacted the seamless conduct of air transport operations and "would lead to flight rescheduling, and, or, cancellations".

According to the statement, the current situation would lead to cancellations and prolonged delays across all airports in the country.

"This is to notify the members of the public, especially, consumers of air transport services in the country, that the aviation sector has been hit by a major crisis with the acute scarcity of aviation fuel otherwise known as Jet-A1," the statement reads.

"For this reason, there will be major disruptions in scheduled flight operations, including cancellations and unnecessary delays across all airports in the country.

"This is a foreseen but unintended consequence of the aviation fuel scarcity in the country."

The operators, therefore, pleaded for the understanding of the travelling public "to bear with our members as efforts are currently being made to address the development and restore normal flight operations".

AON added that "it is committed to rendering seamless and uninterrupted air transport service across the country".

Due to the hike in global oil prices caused by Russia's war in Ukraine, the cost of importation of petroleum products has surged, leading to scarcity and high fuel prices.

In May, it planned to suspend operations — but shelved it after intervention by the house of representatives.

In June, Allen Onyema, AON's vice-president, said at least three domestic airlines were on the verge of shutting down operations due to the soaring price of the commodity.

Osun guber: Good leaders should listen when people complain, Edwin Clark tells APC

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 09:15 AM PDT

Edwin Clark, an Ijaw national leader, has criticised Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for his comments prior to the Osun governorship election.

While inaugurating the APC campaign council for the Osun governorship poll, Adamu had said the ruling party must do all within the law to win the election.

Following the election which held on July 16, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 403,371 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Gboyega Oyetola, incumbent governor and candidate of the APC, who polled 375,027 votes.

In a statement on Thursday, Clark commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security operatives for their efforts to ensure a credible and peaceful election.

He, however, criticised Adamu over his comments regarding his expectations of the APC during the election, adding that there is "discontent" in the country and leaders should listen.

"I must also heartily congratulate, the good people of Osun State who behaved in a very civilised manner which produced peaceful, free and credible results of the election which was held on Saturday, 16th July, 2022, by defying the ambitious and inordinate charge of the National Chairman of the All Progressives' Congress (APC), Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, which he gave to members of the party's National Campaign Council on the Osun State 2022 Governorship Election," the statement reads.

"There is so much discontent in the land. If people are complaining, a good leader should listen. Unfortunately, we have leaders who not only ignore the concerns of the people with impunity, but also make crass statements."

While highlighting the comments of Adamu in which the APC chairman told the campaign council that he had "zero tolerance for failure", Clark said such comments point to desperation.

He also said the APC chairman's "unguarded statement did not come to me as a surprise because I have known him since 1979".

"Our leaders must be able to feel the pulse of the people. Let leadership have a human face," he added.

Food crisis to ease as Russia, Ukraine sign landmark deals on grain exports

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 09:15 AM PDT

Russia and Ukraine signed separate agreements with Turkey and the United Nations to enable the export of millions of tons of grains needed across the world.

The agreement was reached on Friday, according to The Washington Post.

The deal hopes to restart grain exports from Ukraine's Black Sea ports that have been blocked since Russia's invasion and ease the ravaging global food crisis.

Sergei Shoigu, Russian defence minister and Oleksandr Kubrakov, Ukrainian infrastructure minister, signed separate deals with Antonio Guterres, UN secretary-general and Hulusi Akar, the Turkish defence minister.

The ceremony was witnessed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"Today, there is a beacon on the Black Sea. A beacon of hope, a beacon of possibility, a beacon of relief in a world that needs it more than ever," Guterres said at the signing ceremony while addressing the Russian and Ukrainian representatives.

"You have overcome obstacles and put aside differences to pave the way for an initiative that will serve the common interests of all."

The landmark agreement comes after five months of conflict between both countries.

Both countries are among the world's top exporters of agricultural products.

Ukraine is one of the world's largest exporters of wheat, corn and sunflower oil, but Russia's invasion of the country and naval blockade of its ports have halted shipments.

The deal follows a tentative agreement reached last week by Ukrainian and Russian military delegations on a UN plan that would allow Russia to export its grain and fertilisers.

The deal will enable Ukraine to export 22 million tons of grain and other agricultural products stuck in Black Sea ports due to the war.

Guterres said the plan, known as the "Black Sea Initiative," would open a path for significant volumes of commercial food exports from three key Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea: Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny".

It would "bring relief for developing countries on the edge of bankruptcy and the most vulnerable people on the edge of famine."

"It will help stabilise global food prices, which were already at record levels even before the war – a true nightmare for developing countries," Guterres added.

From high oil prices to soaring food prices, low-income economies have been mostly affected by the cascading effects of the conflict.

All affiliate unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ekiti State have agreed to participate in next week's solidarity mass protest organized by the NLC.

The protest is in solidarity with university lecturers, to salvage the education sector in the country.

The various affiliate unions made their commitment known during a meeting held at the labour house in Ado Ekiti to deliberate on how to carry out the protest.

It was later revealed that the cut was caused by a piece of metal hidden in Spink's headgear. After the bout, Spinks retired due to the injury. Tyson won a unanimous decision and took home $7 million.

3. Holyfield–Tyson III: June 26th, 1992

This was always going to be one of the most anticipated matches in history. What it lacked in historical importance, it more than made up for in pure entertainment. Tyson may have been an underdog heading into the bout, but the fact remained that he was about ten times better looking than Michael Spinks. The American public expected Spinks to become the next world champion within a month or two.

National grid collapse: Peter Obi makes demand from Buhari govt

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 07:01 AM PDT

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has urged the federal government to live up to his statutory responsibility and avert socio-economic incidents that bring extreme shock and stress to the national population.

Obi made the call in a series of tweets on Thursday while reacting to the recent collapse of the national grid.

It was reported that the national grid crashed to zero megawatts for the umpteenth time on Wednesday after it developed a fault.

A similar collapse occurred on June 12 and 20 days after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) activated a partial contract order for the Nigerian electricity market to guarantee 5,000MW and at least 4,000MW.

The grid went blank for the fifth time in 2022 at about 12 noon on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday said restoration of the national grid is almost completed following its collapse on Wednesday.

Reacting to the development, Obi wrote on Twitter: "Reports that the national power grid has collapsed for the 6th time in 7 months is alarming. Once again, many Nigerians have been left groping around in darkness without electricity.

"Such negative parameters are not only benchmarks for governance failure but a compelling catalyst for a leadership change.

"Moreover, in a nation where many go to bed hungry, and national bakers going on strike is indicative of the high-stress level in both the productive realm of our economy and quality of life.

"Also, for bread, one of the basic and affordable daily sustenance of the average Nigerian, to become unavailable translates to a national crisis.

"Government must live up to its statutory responsibilities to avert socio-economic incidents that induce extreme shock and stress on the national population."

A Space Odyssey (1968)

The original and still one of the best SciFi movies ever made that has best mobile casino games in between, Stanley Kubrick's classic film tells the story of an astronaut named Dave Bowman who is exploring Jupiter and its moons. A New Hope Star Wars has ruled for decades because it was able to tap into people's emotions through its characters, plotline, special effects and the overall scope of the universe. This first instalment holds up well against whatever else came after it, and with the recent news that Rian Johnson might be directing a new trilogy, there could be hope for more greatness!

Jurassic Park

Steven Spielberg's dino thriller takes place somewhere near San Diego where a dinosaur theme park called Jurassic Park exists. After many accidents including injuries like broken bones, playrivernilecasino casino onlinegames, several kids decide they want out. But when something goes wrong themselves, they must find a way to survive before the dinosaurs escape into the wild.

In conclusion, these movies are all worth watching. They may not have all been perfect films but they were very popular at some point so I thought it'd be interesting to include them here. Hopefully, however, there will come another list of my favourite sci-fi movies which would mean that I've done my job!

Sowore to Atiku: ‘It’s time to quit’

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 06:18 AM PDT

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 general election, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to the comment of the Peoples Democratic Party's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, that he (Sowore) "doesn't even know" anything about the country "because he (Sowore) lives outside the country, he comes every four years to contest the presidency…he fails and goes back again. So, what does Sowore know about this country?…Absolutely nothing."

Atiku made this comment in an interview at Arise TV on Friday monitored by our correspondent.

In a swift reaction, Sowore took to Twitter to reply to Atiku's comment, saying "it's time to quit" after highlighting some of the things he claimed to know.

In his reply, Sowore said Atiku "failed to address how $16bn was used to procure darkness" under his regime, which was the question posed at him, but instead said he (Sowore) did not know anything.

"Dear @atiku, I watched a clip of your @ARISEtv interview this morning wherein you were asked about my view on power scam under your regime, you failed to address how $16bn was used to procure darkness instead you claimed 'he doesn't even know,' well these are some things I know: You ran for office for the first time in 1992 as a presidential aspirant of the SDP, I also ran for the post of the SU (Student Union) President of the UNILAG, you lost , I won. You left, I stayed, to deliver democracy to Nigerians.

"I then left for the US in 1999 at the age of 28. You went on to become the VP of Nigeria, you left Nigerians in darkness after spending $16billion on power, I stayed with Nigerians, shining light on the mess you and your boss created in that sector. You left, I stayed!

"After your failed plan to succeed your boss (Olusegun Obasanjo) who wanted a third term in office, I stayed to botch his third term bid. You, however, joined another political party and tried your luck, you left after you couldn't win. You left, I stayed.

"Since 1999, you have lived in about five countries outside of Nigeria. I know this because your IP keeps changing the same way you kept changing political parties. We both contested in 2019, it was my first time contesting, but after the elections, you left, I stayed. I'm still here!

"You've done your rounds from the SDP-UNCP-PDP-ACN-PDP-APC back to the PDP, you have never done anything for the Nigerian people, you've only taken care of your needs and those that benefit your family, cronies, and friends. It is time to quit and let Nigeria experience electricity!" the publisher of Sahara Reporters tweeted.

He concluded: "My question again, is this; what happened to the $16billion released for electricity during your tenure as Vice President? #WeCantContinueLikeThis"

Transfer: Ronaldo’s only two options revealed

Posted: 22 Jul 2022 06:03 AM PDT

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo's only two options have been revealed amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has already told Man United that he wants to leave the club this summer after their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, as well as their lack of ambition in the transfer market.

The Portugal captain is keen to play in the Champions League next season and his agent Jorge Mendes has been talking to several top European clubs, including Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain, to sign his client.

However, following weeks of rumours, it seems as though Ronaldo may only have only two options left on the table this summer.

According to L'Equipe, "Ronaldo will either move to Atletico Madrid or stay at Manchester United this summer," ahead of the upcoming new season.

The report added that the latter is unlikely because of how Mendes would interpret having been unable to find his client a Champions League club.
